Mississippi Burning

Class,

If some of you need a topic to write on and add to the blog, please read this article or watch the Stewart video on the webpage and comment. So much for our "post-racial" society: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/08/27/nettleton-middle-school-s_n_697268.html

  1. Hi I am from period three.
That middle school has big issues. Now that is being racist. The worst part is that they are rejecting people form different races for class positions like class president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer. That is not right! I hope they think what they did.

  2. Period 5, I personally believe this is ridiculous. The country we live in was not put together to still be separated. Although some things or people take racism to another level, it is just wrong to put it into action for children in middle school. That is setting them with the wrong idea and views of others. I believe it was right for Brandy Springer to take her children out of that school.

I am in total disagreement, which is not supposed that this country gives you the same rights to everyone. The color will not make a person superior. This ideas are ridiculous, that should be left to those who lived during the era of segregation. I think to become President of a class, the color does not matter but the positive things that can bring to their classmates.

I think that is very rascists because everyone is smart enough to do anything, race does not matter. This country was built for everyone to have equal rights and people should not be treated indifferently unless they do something dumb. The school should allow any one to run for those positions. They are stting bad examples for the children.

  6. I agree with Jenny that this is completly just ridiculous. I know that some people are still very racist but it is not right to bring that into schools. Wasnt our country already set on the idea of equally opportunity for everyone. I couldnt believe this and especially since something racist like that is around in schools today.

Although for the most part, this country was built on racial hatred and segregation. It is not the country's pride and joy, that's why laws have been placed in order to eliminate racial unfairness. Now all of a sudden a middle school decides that it will only allow white children to run for president, while black children will have to settle for less. Not only is this unfair, but it is wrong. By not allowing black students to run for higher office, a cruel message of race supremacy is being placed. Honestly, we as a country, have come way to far, to go back to days in which it was okay to believe and show that one race was better than the other.

Straight up racism right there! This article brought back memories to when I ran for VP in middle school. I would've not liked it if I would've been unable to run just because I'm Mexican! Poor kids, what kind of message are they getting at that young age? If I was a parent of one of those middle school kids, I would've definitely done something!

I understand what they were trying to do, to have representations from all ethnic groups, but the way they did was absolutly WRONG! to deny something to someone based on their race, either white or black, is racism. Obama is a clear example that anyone from any race can be who they want to be in this country because that is their God-forsaken right!

I agree with Urepanny on how the school may have been trying to create a multi-racial cabinet for the school's appearance but it truly is not necessary. People need to look at a bigger picture and get over this sense of ethnic variety. If all the kids who were elected were white people the situation is that they had more votes, simple as that. It should be up to any kid what position they'd like to try for and if one race beats another in the election, who cares? Obama won and McCain supporters took their defeat but if McCain had won, Obama supporters probably would have pulled the race card real quick. Both sides of the racial tension need to let go. One race fears being called racists while the other uses racism as a crutch and feed off the sympathy of civil rights groups.

Okay, what the hell is up with this school. I’m glad I didn’t go there, I’d be pretty cheesed off if someone told me I couldn’t run for a position in the Student Council, not that I want to but I’d like to have varied options mind you, because of my race. Especially in a country that isn’t just black and white, no pun intended, but a mix of every ethnicity. I get how they could have a naïve notion that it would create more diversity in the council but when you step back and really look at what you’re doing, it just looks so bad, you can’t really talk your way out of this mess. Civil right’s activists are sure to have a field day on this. I’d be sweating if I was the principal, angry parents….no thank you.

So once again white people think they are the only ones that have the power and knowledge to hold a high position. As long as the law is not enforced the racist will always put down minorities and keep thinking they are better so come on government get to it and do something!!!

I will never understand why people especially adults can let things like this happen. If something like this would have happened at my school I would have fought back through every resource I had. this would be a great chance to bring the media in. I don't get why people always like to make themselves feel superior because of a certain skin color.
