ReplyDelete1. Some academics believe that today’s generation is “overconfident in themselves” because Jean Twenge has been gathering data that is used as evidence to uphold that college students have become selfish. Twenge has also used this data to say that the college students feel superior to those before them.
2. Some of the problems in the workplace, according to Twenge, are that college students feel as though they should have a larger salary, do not like criticism, and do not pay their debts.
3. Grade inflation occurs when teachers give an undeserved or higher grade to students who have not worked hard enough to earn it.
4. Jeffery Arnett argues that these students have overconfidence that people desire to have. Also, many of the students who were surveyed also said that they had a reasonably high chance of participating in community service.
5. In this generation, students are overconfident. It happens in many schools in the nation that inflated grades are given to undeserving students either because the teacher likes them or because the student begs. Students also tend to be more lazy than the years before, such as 1966, and think that if they can get away with making their teacher raise their grade, then they can get away with anything.

ReplyDelete1) Academics believe that today’s generation feels overconfident in themselves due to grade inflation and due to a gap between student self-perception and reality.
2) Overconfidence from college students new to the workplace creates an unreal expectation of workload and pay. People fresh out of college don’t understand that there are steps to climb in the business ladder.
3) Grade inflation is a phenomenon in which more people are getting high grades in current generations than in past ones.
4) Arnett’s counter-argument to what Twenge says is that many of these young people show a sort of confidence that they themselves wish that they had.
5) I believe that today’s generation is in fact a bit overconfident itself, but that they have a right to be. The students who are being compared to statistics from 1966 have access to knowledge and resources that were not available to those people, and thus have an edge over them education-wise.

ReplyDelete1. Some academics believe that today’s generation is “overconfident in themselves” because in the latest surveys incoming freshman have rated themselves as “above average” in several categories.
2. According to Twenge some of the problems posed by overconfidence in the workplace is that the incoming college graduates are unwilling to take criticism and expect come in expecting a unreasonably high paycheck.
3. Grade inflation is when a student receives a higher grade for work that would have received a lower grade in the past.
4. Arnett argues that the overconfidence seems to be causing more good then harm. He states that crimes and substance abuse are all down.
5. I believe that today’s generation of students have become overconfident now that more and more students are going to college.

ReplyDelete1) Academics believe that today’s generation is “overconfident in themselves”, because they have more self-centered, more high self-perception and superior.
2) Some of the problems posed with overconfidence in relationship and workplace is that they don’t like criticism and don’t like to play their debts.
3) Grade inflation is when people give students good grade but they don’t deserved it.
4) Some of Jeffery Arnett’s counter-arguments is that students who think are surveyed others say that they have more chance to be involved on the community.
5) I think today generation of student is more overconfident that before. Some students for example, now feel like they are the best of everything when they get a good great on a class by many times is not because of their effort instead are because they are cool with their teachers. But in the other side there can be students that feel overconfident because they do know.

Study Finds Students Confident
1. Some academics believe that young people are overconfident because, when asked, they are more likely to rate themselves above average than people in the past. Twenge came up with this idea and it was based on data from a UCLA survey of “hundreds of thousands of college freshmen.”
2. Bosses say that this “overconfidence” leads new employes who are fresh out of college to have expectations of higher salaries, to take criticism badly, and to feel as though they don’t have to work their way up at work.
3. Grade inflation is when there are too many people getting A's. Twenge says people are getting A's too easily and that is causing them to think they are better than they actually are.
4. Arnett's counter arguments are that confidence is good and that people are staying out of trouble. He also goes on to say that Twenge is trying to use the data to promote negative stereotypes of young people.
5. Students today are overconfident. It is much too easy to get a high score on the work that is assigned, and that allows us to become lazy. There shouldn’t be work for the sake of having work, but rather for the sake of learning.

Study finds students confident
1.)Some academics believe that today’s generations is “overconfident in themselves” because as Twenge discovered in his data gathering sixty percent of college freshmen in 2009 rated themselves above average than the sixty percent of college freshmen in the 1960’s.
2.)According to Jean Twenge some of the problems imposed with overconfidence in the workplace are because the recent college students arrive expecting to receive a good salary and they are unwilling to take criticism or to even pay their dues.
3.)Grade inflation is when a teacher gives a student a grade but it’s not just a grade it’s a grade that the student has not worked hard enough to earn it.
4.)Arnett’s states that many of these college students show that they have a confidence they wish they had. He also disagrees these findings are like a way to promote negative stereotypes of these young people, also that crime and abuse substances are down way down.
5.)I do believe that the generation now is a bit more confident because we are being compared to students in 1966 which back then there was not this much advancement in technology than there was back then. Also because now there are bigger numbers of people going to college and graduating.

1) Some academics think today’s generation is so overly confident because they have become more self centered. Through analysis of information academics can also infer that students feel superior to the students that came before them due to a couple of decent grades.
2) According to Jean Twenge, college students have unreasonable expectations when it comes to their wages. Twenge also mentions that they are very opposed to criticism.
3) Grade inflation occurs when teachers give students high letter grades for work that would be considered inadequate in the past.
4) Jeffrey Arnett argues that most students have the overconfidence that they themselves wish they had. He also makes it clear that this overconfidence is what allows students to avoid negative influences. Instead some of these students look to do public services.
5) Today’s Generation has indeed showed signs of over confidence. So many good grades have been given out to students who probably did not work to their full potential and cheated their way through. This leads to procrastination and that is not a good thing. It is very simple for an instructor to give out a letter grade, but it’s the instructor’s responsibility to make sure his/her students are actually learning the material being taught.

Twenge came up with this idea because they did a survey at UCLA and the majority rated themselves above average and better that the survey that was done in the 1960's.
2) Some of the problems posed with overconfidence leads to the fresh out of college graduates believe that they have the right to get a better salary due to their education. They will also believe that they will not have to work their way up to a better position since that was their major.
3) Grade inflation is that many people are earning A's in their classes and they are going to believe that they are better than what they are really are. The professors/teachers are making them feel good about themselves but in reality they are not that good.
4) Arnett's counter arguments are that confidence that young people have is good and that is making them stay out of trouble. He also states that Twenge is using the data to promote a bad stereotype that affects teenagers.
5) Students today are overconfident, I state this because teachers now a days just give us work to keep us busy and not to learn the material is being taught. Also a lot of teachers give us easy extra credit assignments that can raise our grade and make us feel better than others.

3) Grade inflation is when you are given a higher grade in a certain class, than it would have received in the past.
4) Some of Jeffrey Arnett’s counter-arguments to Twenge’s findings are that although students are more confident nowadays this translates into good things such as in a decrease in crime, rate of substance abuse, and rate of sexual risk-taking. In addition he adds that the focus should be on positive trends related to young people instead of negatively stereotyping them.
5) Yes, I believe that today’s generation of students is overconfident. Throughout my high school experience I have seen people that think they can get by school by doing the minimum requirements for the class. I feel like they think that they are smart enough to get by, by simply performing at their minimum. Unfortunately, this works in our school because these can be “the big fish in the small pond”, but once we all go to college we will become the small fish, and those who have always performed at their minimum, will have a rude awakening in college.

1.Academics believe that young people today are overconfident because after filling out a survey asking them to rate themselves, 60% of the responses said, “above average”. Whereas in 1966 when the survey first started only 29% rated themselves above average.
2.According to Twenge, some issues that young overconfident people face are that they expect a higher pay, they are unwilling to criticism and reluctant to pay their dues.
3. Grade inflation is when today’s generation is receiving far more A’s than the past generations did. Thus, leaving them to believe they are better than everybody else and labeling themselves above average.
4.Some of Arnett’s arguments are that a lot of the students have the confidence they wished they had. In addition, he also states that many of the young people are doing more good than bad.
5.In my opinion, I believe today’s generation is a bit overconfident because many students are receiving grades that they shouldn’t be. Thus making them believe they are “smart”. In fact, in many schools grade inflation has grown. Teachers are giving students a high grade just because he/she is their favorite.

ReplyDelete1.Right off the bat they’ve done surveys and researched many students and over 60% think they’re above average and that’s just wrong. Teachers give out grades to easily and make people believe that they’re giving a hard effort when they’re really not.
2.Overconfidence causes students to expect more than they deserve money wise and they aren’t able to take criticism very well.
3.Grade inflation is the same as monetary inflation in which basically the value of grades compared to that of those in the past is less.
4.Arnett claims that those negative perceptions overshadow the larger number of positive improvements of this generation over the last. Basically crime rates and rates of substance abuse are down along with rates of sexual risk taking are down.
5.I have got to admit that most students now a days are really confident in themselves and often tend to “show off” when they get a really high grade for little to no work. Also a lot of kids don’t seem to be comfortable with criticism and get defensive when a flaw is pointed out or an alternative idea presented.

(4) That a lot of the negative behavior in the youth has gone down
(5) I think that today’s generation is overconfident in a bad way because they do see themselves as superior but that doesn’t mean that they are. Some can’t grasp concepts as fast and other are just to lazy to want to better themselves. Some of the youth has been putting down people that are not as advanced as themselves but this train of thought has been repeatedly been reinforced by some of their teachers so once they are out fending for themselves, their expectations do end up being rather high and it has also made them slightly more stubborn.

1.Academics believe that today's generation is “overconfident in themselves” because today’s generation has more self esteem than the past generations probably because of grade inflation, and because in a survey incoming college freshmen rated themselves as “above average’’ in several categories compared with college freshmen who were surveyed in the 1960s.
2.According to Jean Twenge, overconfidence in the relationship and the workplace can bring problems to someone. It can affect peoples’ relationships by making people feel superior to others and this can bring problems to someone. In the workplace, many bosses and others have long asserted that recent college students often arrive with unreasonably high expectations for salary and an unwillingness to take criticism or to pay their dues.
3.Grade inflation is when teachers make students believe they are superior/better than other people by give students a better grade than they deserve.

1. Some academics believe that today’s generation is “overconfident in themselves”, mainly due to Jean Twenge’s recent studies and surveys that show data indicating that a large percent of college students rated themselves as “above average”. Also, from these studies, it is now believed that the gap between self-perception and reality has grown, as well as narcissism.
2. According to Jean Twenge, excess of confidence in students entering a workplace creates the idea of giving less, receiving more. Employees expect higher salaries, less criticism and believe they are well-prepared to take on any position. As for problems in relationships, people tend to believe they are superior thus, creating misunderstanding.
3. Grade inflation is the act of awarding students with a higher grade than deserved.
4. As an opposition to Twenge, Jeffrey Arnett argues that the nation has benefited from this new and improved confidence in students. He states that thanks to this, crime, substance abuse and sexual risk-taking have decreased.
5. I think that today’s generation is overconfident for many reasons. 4.)Arnett’s counter-argument concludes of seeing that Twenge stereotypes these students when they contribute to a good pattern. He believes that isn’t right when crime is down, rates of substance abuse are down and also all the news is good.
5.)As of today’s generation of students being overconfidence, can go both ways, it just all depends. Some believe they are smarter because of a higher grade or even percentage and others believe the grade doesn’t matter as long as you understand the curriculum and pass successfully.

ReplyDelete1.Some academics believe that today’s generation is “overconfident in themselves” because when asked, sixty percent of college freshmen in 2009 rated themselves as “above average” on the national survey compared to thirty-nine percent in 1966.
2.According to Twenge, overconfidence brings several problems in relationships and the workplace. For example, today’s generation expect unreasonably high salaries and are unwilling to take criticism.
3.Grade inflation means that students are getting a higher grade on work than they actually deserve.
4.Arnett’s counterarguments to Twenge’s findings are that labeling young people as “overconfident” is creating nothing but bad stereotypes, also that today’s crime is going down due to “overconfidence.”
5.Today’s generation is indeed a bit overconfident due to really high grades which many did not work for to their full potential. Many, form my personal observations achieve “success” in school simply by being really close to their teachers or having smart friends that are willing to let them cheat.

Study finds students confident
1. today’s generation is “over confident in themselves” because it was apparent that n previous years college studemts havent been nearly as close as freshman in college present day compared to those college freshmen in the 1960’s. its a rising factor of knowledge.
2. some problems may be that one who is less experienced may think in his own head that he is superb and may know more, which might not be the case. They will give less and recieve more. "know-it-alls"
3. grade inflation is giving a student a good grade when they haver not earned it.
4. counter arguemnts are how sexual risk taking and crime have decreased from this over confudence in students. its a bitter situation.
5.i think a vast majority of the student population is overconfiudent, yet i dont think its that bad of a thing. low confidence is never good, in any situation. Confidence is good, too much is cocky.

ReplyDelete1. Some of today’s academics suggest that today’s generation of college students are over confident because they consider themselves above average academically and socially. Obtaining good grades in high school and being socially active lead them to be overconfident about their success in college and in the real world.
2. According to Twenge’s research, some problems with overconfident in the work place involve the person’s inability to take criticism, unwillingness do their work, and unreasonably high salary expectations.
3. Grade inflation is when a numerous amount of students have an A or A- average in high school because they are given high grades in class.
4. I think that today’s generation is split when it comes to having overconfidence. The students that have all the academic and social befits feel that they are above average; they obtain good grades in their classes, they are socially active, and may have also been considered bright individuals at a young age. This gives them over confident that they will definitely be the ones to succeed in college and in life; however, most of them do not compare themselves with the rest of the students around the nation and see themselves as over achievers because they are the most outstanding in their class. The other half of the generation finds themselves under confident and this may be for several reasons; family back ground, lack of encouragement from family or teachers, fanatical situations etc. All these different factors can attribute to a student’s confidence level.

ReplyDelete1. Some academics believe that today’s generation is “overconfident in themselves” because know they rank themselves to be above average in there intellectual level and the student say they are superior to the students from past generations from a some decent grades they received in high school.
2. According to Jean Twenge some problems that occur due to overconfidence in the relationship and the workplace are that they take criticism to improve in anything they should because they believe they don’t have to work there way up and they expect to have a higher paying salary.
3. Grade inflation is when a student receives a grade that they didn’t work hard for and don’t deserve at all which makes them think they are better than everyone else even though they aren’t better.
4. Some of Jeffery Arnett’s counter-arguments to Twenge’s data is that the overconfidence of the young people is keeping them from bad behavior like the crime and the substance abuse rates have gone down due to this. He also states that Twenge is using her findings to promote negative stereotypes of the students instead of positive trends that are actually changing for the better.
5. I believe that today’s generation has become overconfident but they have every right to be since each year more and more students are attending college. Plus being compared to the surveys of the past generation students shouldn’t make them seem there better its just they have more resources and technology that really didn’t exist back then.
Study finds students confident: response
ReplyDelete1. The reason why academics like Jean Twenge believe that today’s generation is “overconfident in themselves” is because of student out put on a yearly survey. When asked how they would rate themselves the majority of incoming college freshmen rated themselves above average. While in 1966 only a minimal 39 percent rated themselves above average
2. Jean Twenge emphasizes that in the workplace, recent college students will often walk through the door with unrealistic high expectations for salary and an even greater unwillingness to take criticism or pay their dues.
3. The term Grade inflation is when too many people are receiving A’s. Twenge states that the once coveted A has become too easily attainable, instilling in students a grater self confidence then they should have.
4. One of Jeffrey Arnett’s counter arguments to Twenge’s findings is that although college students might have developed a larger than life self confidence it’s not necessarily a bad thing, in fact it’s this kind of attitude that allows them to thrive in the work place because most “older” employees wish they had their confidence. This fact alone puts them ahead of the competition. One step closer to begin on top.
5. I honestly think it’s true, today’s generation of students are overconfident. But isn’t that the very reason why we are encourage to go to college? To gain the CONFIDENCE need to perform to our full potential in which ever career we decide to embark in. think about it, if our future world leaders weren’t confident in themselves would you really trust them? Yeah, me either. Confidence is as much of an essential life skill as communication or mobility, without it you cannot succeed.

ReplyDelete4. A counter argument that Arnett uses is that students have the confidence that the earlier generations were lacking. This burst of confidence will allow the students to better succeed in college and be involved in community service.
1.Some academics believe that today's generation is "overconfident in themselves" because the evidence gathered shows that a higher rate of students have A's. This can lead to a student believing he or she is “above average.”
ReplyDelete2.According to Twenge, problems that can occur in relationships and in the workplace as a result of overconfidence, are high expectations, such as a higher income.
3.Grade inflation is when there are to many A's being awarded to students who did not necessarily work very hard to achieve them, therefore discrediting the value of an A.
4.Jeffery Arnett says many students have just the right amount of confidence. He says that as a result, crime rates have dropped, the rate of substance abuse has dropped along with the rates of sexual risk taking.
5.I myself believe that today's generation is overconfident. Many student believe that just because they are in a specific program, or because that they get good grades that they are better than everyone else.

ReplyDelete1. Some academics believe that today's generation is "overconfident in themselves” like Professor Jean Twenge who has found data indicating the superiority behavior within the young adults today. Surveys have been done where most of the students rate themselves “above average” whereas in the past they didn’t.
2. According to Jean Twenge some of the problems in the relationships in the workplaces are the overconfidence of college students not taking in constructive criticism from bosses and believing they deserve more like a larger salary.
3. Grade inflation is when a student obtains a higher grade for work that would have received a lower grade in the past.
4. Jeffery Arnett argues that people wish they had the confidence that the youth has today and that more of today’s college students are likely to participate in helping the community. He also states that both crime rate and substance abuse is down.
5. I believe today’s generation of students is over confident. Now a days young adults are showing entitlement amongst others and letting the rest of society know that they have a voice and that it definitely counts. Data like the surveys showing the ”over confidence” and more and more young adults going to college show how much it actually makes sense.

ReplyDelete1. Academics believe this generation is overconfident these days because more than half of the students rated themselves as above average in several categories which is a dramatic increase than the percentage from the 1960’s.
2. Some problems posed with overconfident students in the work place is they go in with high expectations. They expect to get higher salary with less work, they are unwilling to take criticism or pay their dues.
3. Grade inflation is when more and more students are receiving A’s as the average for their high school years.
4. Arnett’s states that people shouldn’t only look at the negatives of overconfidence but also the positives. Crime and rates of substance abuse decreased and the percentage of students willing to participate in public service in college increased.
5. I do believe this generation is overconfident but not necessarily in a bad way. I believe we use this overconfidence to feel good about ourselves when taking tests to not over analyze or over think things. Students perform better when they are confident on what they are doing so I believe overconfidence should be looked at as a positive.

ReplyDelete1. Some academics believe that today’s generation is “overconfident in themselves” because Jean Twenge and her colleagues found out that a greater amount of incoming college freshmen identified themselves as superior or “above average" in multiple divisions when they are compared to those college freshmen surveyed before them.
2. Overconfidence in relationships and in the work place cause the college students to irrationally anticipate an overwhelming amount of money for their salary and they reluctant to constructive criticism or “to pay their dues.”
3. Grade inflation is giving a better grade average to students that may not have deserved it and is the probable cause for students’ belief that they are eminent in comparison to others.
4. Jeffrey Arnett claims that the confidence students have now is a desirable trait and he argues that these attitudes lead to positive patterns in which enhance better behavior from students by claiming that “Crime is down.”
5. I believe that in a way the students of today can feel an empowerment of superiority because they have prodigious amounts of resources that past students did not have available to them and our grading or educational system has gone up in rankings, so it may be easier now and I believe grade inflation is true.

1. According to Jean Twenge, author of “Generation me,” today’s generation of freshmen college students grew out to be more self-centered than their elders causing them to be “overconfident in themselves.” They probably feel superior entering college with good grades from high school.
2. The problems Twenge believes that overconfidence will cause are that students will come with highly unreasonably high expectations for salary, getting criticized, or even pay their dues.
3. Grade inflation means that students are receiving rather than earning higher grades as an average whole compared to the generations before.
4. Jeffrey Arnett’s counter-arguments are that many people would envy the young students’ confidence. He believes that the “overconfidence” is just another stereotype. He even includes that the students can make good in the society.
5. I believe that today’s generation of students are overconfident, unlike before when technologies aren’t advanced and people back then have to work really hard for their grades. Nowadays we have advanced technologies as resources to help increase the grades.

3.Grade inflation is when there is an increase in students receiving high grades compared to previous generations, such as A’s and B’s, which can make the influence of the grade received decrease in power.
4.Jefferey Arnett’s counter-arguments to Twenge’s findings say that overconfidence shouldn’t be looked at as a negative stereotype because it has produced positive outcomes, such as a reduction in crime and drug abuse among the youth of today. It has also accounted for the increase in community service among young adults.
5.I do feel that today’s generation is overconfident based on academic success and physical superiority, but I feel that they use this confidence to their advantage to help others in the community, obtain a higher-education, and take on almost any challenge.

5) I do not think today’s generation of students is overconfident actually. On the contrary, I think we are conscious of the problems our economy is going through and we are aware that we have to give it all to earn the job we want and if we have to work up to it we will. Plus, to get the position we compete amongst ourselves and so we take more classes and educate ourselves more than was usually required.
