Hello Class,
A reminder that tonight's reading will feature Sabato pages 403-410. There will be a quiz tomorrow on those pages. Hey, if anyone is looking for a second blog entry topic they can continue the discussion of the Mosque being built near "ground zero" territory. Is this an issue of freedom of religion or an opportunity for Mosque planners to exercise more sensitive judgement? What do you think? Also, take a look at the earlier blog assignment posted on May 25th below. You will be doing this on Tuesday night if you want a head's-up. See you tomorrow.

I believe that the Muslims have the right to build a mosque near ground zero. Its a form of expression that everyone has the right to do so,guranteed by the 1st amendment.Im sure if it was any other religion, people wouldnt have much of a problem with it.However since its muslims and people see them as "terrorists" many people are against it.

Agreeing with Jacky R [who is sitting right next to me], I too believe the mosque near ground zero has the right to be bulit. Even though it would be a Muslim worshiping place, no one should be against it. Although 75% of people voted against Obama's decision, I agree with him. If the spot is a private location, then why not make a mosque? I definitely think this is an issue regarding religion.
Where is the quiz!!???!!!

ReplyDeleteI agree and believe that the mosque has the the right to be built wherever. People come to America for freedom and what kind of message is that sending to everyone else if the Muslims are not allowed to build their worship temple where thay want it? People against this only think of a Muslim and think of terrorism. However, many people are against this and I believe it will be easier for everyone if it was moved somewhere else though i again do not agree it should.

ReplyDeleteI definitely agree that the mosque should de build. I don't see why there's a problem building a mosque especially if it's build on a private place, then no one should have a problem with it. The Muslims have the right to have their own place to worship. Everyone that is against this are just being ignorant. I see this as an issue of religion.

ReplyDeleteI disagree with Jacky R. and the rest of the bloggers.
Muslims should not build their mosque on ground zero. Why do they want to build it there on the first place? There is 1 million other places to build their mosque. Why under ground zero? That is totally disrespectful to Americans and to the people who died in 9/11. I believe that they should build their Mosque and worship somewhere else...

ReplyDeleteI believe that a few Muslims shouldn't ruin it for the rest. Muslims make up the majority of the world's population and should be able to practice their religion freely, since this is the U.S. a free country. Under the Bill Of Rights there is nothing opposing the construction of the Mosque near ground zero, ironically it would infringe of the rights of those Muslims to prevent them from building their Mosque on private property. Those opposing its construction would be breaking the law by violating other citizen's rights. It's like saying a Muslim cant buy a house there because he would be praying to Allah near ground zero. Just because a few Muslims committed an act of terrorism does not mean they were acting in accordance to the feelings of all the Nation of Islam.

ReplyDeleteThe building of the mosque in ground zero is significantly disrespectful to those who died in 9/11. Families with relatives who died in ground zero don't really want a mosque as a memory of their loved ones who passed away. The mosque probably has no significance to them, they could care less, especially if they are not muslims. Even though, Muslims have every right to express their religion however and wherever they like, the mosque would just seem unappropriate for ground zero.

In a perfect world everyone could practice the religion they wanted where they wanted without there being any conflict, and while this is a guaranteed right, its never really gone as planned. Granted people know that the people who want to build the mosque have a good intention, to show that all Islamic people arent extremists and dont have anything to do with the 9/11 attacks, but well there are people who are very against this. The protestors motive being that, while it wasnt all Islamic people that did the attack, the terrorist was an Isam extremist. Therefore, they shouldnt build the mosque so close to Ground Zero. Now, this issue could be argued both ways, but what I believe is that, those in favor of the mosque being built should look to those who have lost family members or loved ones in the 9/11 attacks. It really boils down to the Islamic people having to be more sensitive, not only for other people, but for themselves as well, because it is very possible that attacks will be held against the Mosque if it is built. And so building the Mosque so close to Ground Zero, is a sensitivity issue, and what they need to do is build the Mosque farther from Ground Zero.

I understand how the building of the mosque can be seen as disrespectful. A lot of people definitely are still emotional about the 9/11 attacks. But I see it as a stepping stone towards looking at the Islam religion and not associating it with the 9/11 attack and other acts of terrorism. But for the sake of the people who still feel strongly about it, I think they should move to another location. This would prevent further problems.

ReplyDeleteI understand that allowing the Muslims to build their mosque on ground zero, is a right they are given by the 1st amendment. However, Muslims should respect the fact that 9/11 is still in the hearts of Americans, especially those who lost family members or friends due to the terrorist attack, so they should realize that it would be disrespectful to build the mosque so close to where unforgettable damage has been done. I understand that here in America there is a freedom of religion, and people all over the world come here to take advantage of that freedom, as well as others. But the mosque being built on ground zero has more to do with respect, and Muslims should respect the country by not building their mosque so close to where previous damage had been done by people of their same race. This does not mean that all Muslims are terrorist. It simply means that Muslims are well aware of 9/11 and they should respect the fact that Americans would rather have them build their mosque somewhere else.

ReplyDeleteWhen it comes to issues regarding freedoms, everyone just seems to go stark raving mad about it. There are pros, there are cons and extremist added to the mix. Its always controversial and the government exercises their power in dealing with such matters, because without them who knows what could happen. I personally don’t care where they build this mosaic, it is up to them to choose where and if it really is in “ground zero” it shouldn’t matter because they own the property that they wish to build it on. If it wasn’t in ground zero I doubt anybody would oppose such a thing, they’d just be like:
“Oh did you hear about that mosaic they’re building?”
“Ah, yeah the wife mentioned something about it”
“Yeah, traffic will be slower than a snail crawl, that’s why I’m taking the subway”
Etc.
It seems more of a morale battle to me, and what the social norms are. The Muslims really should be more sensitive in the matter of the location however considering the big deal that the event of what transpired in 9-11 that shook people. On a side note, is it really gonna be so huge that its gonna overshadow the city and belittle the whole 9-11 incident.

ReplyDeleteI think that they should have the right to build the Mosque where ever they want. People have the right to religion. I don't think people should have resentment towards a religion because a certain group from the same religion caused so much havoc it is not the fault of every muslim.

ReplyDeleteI think that the Mosque being built in the "ground zero" is not a good idea because its not a good place to be built at. I think the Muslims should find another calm place to built it. The other thing is that the Muslims could cause a big issue by builting that there by having people protest and not being okay maybe of the religion . I think they should think more of where they actually want to built the Mosque so there wont be any problems.

ReplyDeleteI think that the Mosque is respectful to the lost life of the 9/11. The government shold not allowed this project. I think the Mosque could find a better place to build this so there would not be problems wirh the people.

ReplyDeleteI don't believe the modque should be built on ground zero because of moral reasons. It should not be built out of respect to the people who suffered from the tragic memory of 9/11. It should also be taken in mind that if the mosque is built, the cost will most likely come out of the pockets of all tax payers (Which I'm sure includes a few of us). The Consitution does state the freedom of religion, and I'm not saying it can not be built, but that it should be built on other grounds away from ground zero. If the mosque were to be built on ground zero, it will cause much controversy. Might as well find another location to build this place of worship, and have this group build it with money out of their own pockets.

ReplyDeleteI feel that the mosque should be built somewhere else because of all places in such a big city like New York City why would they choose the site next to ground zero. That is disrespectful to the many people that lost their lives and their families. Why should the muslims worship in a place where other fellow muslims killed thousands of people on 9/11
